VIDEO: Area evacuated following explosion

Emergency personnel still at the scene where military ordnance cannon projectile exploded in Pretoria West on Monday morning.

An explosion on Monday morning in Pretoria West has prompted parents to start fetching their children from Laerskool Simon Bekker.

The area was evacuated by emergency staff when one of four military ordnance cannon projectile exploded at a scrap metal dealership, said Colonel Caroline Naidoo, Pretoria-west station commander.

Children from the nearby Annie’s Kleuterskool were taken to Laerskool Simon Bekker because the area around the explosion was declared unsafe.

“There will be no school for the rest of the day. This is a mess. We informed the parents about the situation and they have started fetching their children,” deputy principal of the primary school, Jimmy Roberts, said.

A concerned mother, Linda Mnisi, said she panicked  when she heard what had happened. “I immediately rushed to fetch my child from school.”

Emergency staff were by mid-morning still on the scene.

More information will follow soon.
