A would-be robber was shot and wounded at the Absa Bank building in Gezina on Friday.

Eyewitness Ron Sibiya said he was withdrawing cash from an ATM outside the bank on the corner of Ben Swart Street and Steve Biko Road when he heard two gunshots. He saw someone frantically running in his direction.

“I panicked, left my money in the ATM and also started running,” Sibiya said. “I did not know what was happening or exactly where the shots were coming from.”

Sibiya said the shots sounded like it was coming from a parking lot nearby.

“When I asked a bank staff member what happened, she explained that a security guard escorting a client to the bank opened fire when men tried to rob them,” he said.

“One of the men was apparently shot and wounded in the chest and taken to hospital.”

It was not immediately clear how many men were involved in the robbery.

Police could not disclose any information at the time.
