Incompetent driving was the major cause of road fatalities over the festive season, said Transport Minister Dipuo Pieterse on Tuesday.

Pieterse was speaking at the release of the preliminary 2016 festive season road safety statistics  in Midrand.

She said the overwhelming majority of fatal crashes were as a result of vehicles overturning and head-on collisions.

“This points to the incompetence of our drivers to handle their motor vehicles,” said Pieterse.

Pieterse said the department would employ more officials in an effort to curb corruption at the licensing offices.

A total of 1 714 fatalities were recorded for the month of December – a 5 percent increase on the previous year.

More than 800 fatalities on the country’s roads had already been recorded by mid-December.
