Police blamed over sharp crime rise in the west

Sharply rising crime is of concern to the community policing forum in the west of Pretoria, and police have been called on to get their act together.

CPF spokesperson Thesigan Pillay said residents of Pretoria West were increasingly being exposed to serious crimes.

“The crime statistics for the months of June and July show an alarming increase in contact crimes,” he said.

“The increase to such crimes can only be caused by the inability of our criminal justice system to cope with, manage and prevent the crimes.”

Pillay said the first line of defense was in the ability of the police to carry out their key functions and responsibilities, which were to prevent and investigate crime, maintain public order, protect and secure the inhabitants of the republic.

“Clearly the failure of the Pretoria West police station to carry out and fulfill their key responsibilities has resulted in the escalation of crime,” he said.

“As such the community policing forum together with sector two of the police forum demand that a special task team be established to effectively and efficiently address the crimes plaguing our society.”

Pillay said the crime statistics for June showed that a total of 107 crimes, ranging from business robberies and sexual assaults, were committed in Danville, Wespark, Kwaggasrand and Philip Nel Park.

There were 20 motor vehicle theft cases in June.

“Two other concerning crimes were common robbery and damage to property. A total of 17 cases each were reported for these crimes,” Pillay said.
