NEWSFLASH: ‘Hijackers’ nabbed on the N4

Two people were arrested at the N4 highway tollgate near Atteridgeville on Monday on suspicion of being hijackers.

Police spokesperson, Constable Tumisang Moloto, said it was a swift police reaction led to the arrest and the recovery of an AK47 rifle and a 9mm Berreta pistol.

“Three men driving a white VW Golf 6 had allegedly intercepted a delivery bakkie, a Nissan NP200, at the tollgate in an attempt to hijack it.

Police were immediately informed. A joint reaction by police units which includes, Tactical Response Team, Tshwane Flying Squad and Tshwane West Cluster crime prevention team led to the arrest of two suspects,” he said.

Moloto said one of the men evaded arrest and was still at large.

“Shortly after investigation, it was discovered that the Golf 6 was reported stolen in May in Pretoria West.

Further investigation will be conducted to establish if any of the arrested is linked to other crimes in the area.”

Moloto said the two men aged between 40 and 46 were expected in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court soon.

“We are appealing to anyone with information which could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspect to come forward and assist the police investigation,” he said.

A case of attemptted hijacking, possession of unlicensed firearms was opened at the Attridgeville police station for further police investigation.
