A woman was seriously injured when a car crashed into a pile of building rubble in Rietfontein last week.

This happened on Thursday around 22:00 in Frederika Street.

Megan McMaster was a passenger in the car.

“The vehicle rolled onto the pile, then tipped over and landed on the passenger side,” said McMaster’s grandmother, Emerenthea Scholtz.

“When she tried to get out of the vehicle, the driver had to pick her up out of the car.”

She said the rubble was at the Jacaranda centre.

“There were no construction signs in place to warn motorists about the rubble,” she said.

“It was impossible to drive on that road during the day. The taxis simply pushed you off the road because, with the rubble, there was only one lane to drive in.”

Scholtz said she took McMaster back to hospital on Tuesday.

She sustained injuries on her shoulder and arms.

“She has a new pain in her pelvis, a blue eye and a small hole in her leg,” she said.

DA area ward councillor Juanita du Plooy said she was only aware of construction work at the entrance to the centre.

Stephen Matabane of the Mowana Properties said he was also not aware of the rubble in the road.

He said he would investigate further.
