VIDEO: Sombre mood at memorial service of metro cop killed in Mabopane

A metro police officer who died after he was hit by a taxi was bid farewell on Thursday in the west of Pretoria.

Constable Kenneth Kokela died on Monday afternoon after he was hit by a minibus taxi during a stop-and-search operation.

It was alleged that the taxi hit the 39-year-old officer while he was trying to stop it.

He died on the scene.

TMPD spokesperson Nonhlanhla Mgiba said the accident happened on the notorious Moloto Road.

Family, friends and colleagues gathered at the Tshwane metro police headquarters along corner Eskia Mphahlele and WF Nkomo street to pay homage to the fallen constable.

The mood in the hall where the memorial service was held got sombre when a letter from the deceased’s wife was read out during the service.

Parts of it read: “I didn’t expect to be a widow so soon. But only God knows why He had to take you.“

“I meant it when I said I will love you till death do us apart. I will continue to love and our children,” the letter read to the chilling silence and bowed heads.

Kokela’s aunt Rose Mahlangu also dampened the mood as she described the condition of the family with tears in her eyes.

“We are broken. Our knees are feeble and our hearts are bleeding. But in all that we say, only God knows why.”

Mgiba said the department was reeling from the loss of an officer who had just been in the department for three years.

She said police were still investigating the case.

An inquest has been opened.
