Police gave Rietfontein North primary school pupils some handy advice on how to cope with bullying last Wednesday.

The children were taught some self-defence and survival tips and moves by Warrant Officer Marinda Austin of the Villieria police station, and Roberto Bovo of the world Tong Soo Do association.

“The children really enjoyed the interaction with each other as well as with the police,” said police spokesperson Captain Coba Brits.

“Although the children must know that bullying is wrong, they must also know that they can always turn to the police for help.”

Brits said the police must make a positive difference in the community, with the emphasis on children’s safety.

“The children must trust the police and know that they can call on them for help,” she said.

She said the increase in crime involving children was a concern and that regular communication between schools and police was important.

The police provided the following tips to empower your child against bullying:

– Speak up for your child.

– Teach your kids how to stand up for themselves.

– Be your child’s go-to person and foster open communication.

– Build inner confidence.

– Welcome your child’s friends into your home.
