UPDATE: Calm after weekend land grab battle in East Lynne

Peace has been restored to East Lynne following violent clashes between metro police and land grabbers on Saturday, a local has confirmed.

Resident, Elsie Kidson said the police had fired rubber bullets at a group of squatters who had occupied land along Jan Coetzee and Lanhman streets, leaving one man injured.

She said the newly-arrived squatters allegedly threw stones at the police who were demolishing about 180 shacks in the area.

Local councillor Freddie Pienaar said on Sunday the area was calm, though a few newly-erected shacks stood “but the squatters were nowhere to be seen”.

“We haven’t seen anyone erect or occupy that area today.”

He said various voting stations saw a large turnout with residents out to update their details on the voter’s roll ahead of next year’s elections leaving, but some returned later.

“We couldn’t take chances so we asked for voting stations to shut down.

Luckily we had a reasonable turnout on Sunday and all went well.”

Pienaar said he was informed that the squatters planned to return to the area and blockade all entrances and exits.

Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior-Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said officers were monitoring identified land-grab hot spots throughout the city.

He said anyone found occupying land illegally would be arrested.
