Mpho Morwe (19) and Puseletso Shongone (18) were injured when they were allegedly shot by police in East Lynne on Saturday.
The two claimed the police intentionally shot at them when they were caught up in a clash between land invaders and the police on the corner of Lanham and Jan Coetzee streets.
The police fired the rubber bullets to disperse a group of squatters who were allegedly throwing stones at them as they (police) demolished the more than 180 shacks recently built there.
“We weren’t even aware of what was happening.
We just saw a group of people running and we also ran.”
Shongoane said the police told them to run or else they would get shot.
The duo ran as they were told, but were still shot.
“As we were running a vehicle chased after us and rubber bullets were fired our way.”
“I realised that Mpho was down and I turned back and lay on top of her to protect her.”
Shongoane said despite them lying on the ground, police kept shooting at them.
He was shot twice in his right leg and Morwe once on her side.
The teen said he was reluctant to report the case to the police as he doubted they would take the matter seriously.
“How many people are shot with live rounds and never live to tell the story?” Shongane said.
One more person was injured in the scuffle.
Mpho Morwe was shot on the side.
