Residents want prostitutes removed

Prostitutes plying their trade near the stream.

Prostitution aggravates crime in Philip Nell Park in Pretoria West, residents recently said.

Committee member of the Philip Nell Business Forum, Herman Ratsoma, said it was time to remove prostitutes operating along a stream in Vom Hagen Strreet.

“Prostitution attracts criminals. At night it is not safe to walk near Vom Hagen Street because there are heavily armed criminals who rob people.”

Ratsoma said a criminal once pulled out a gun on him and a friend as they were walking past the stream. He said the problem with prostitution had been going on for years now and was affecting residents from Proclamation Hill, Philip Nel Park and Pretoria West.

“Several houses have been broken into and the criminals are always seen running towards the stream. We have tried to cut the trees and bushes around the stream but it does not help. All that will help is if those people can be removed from the stream,” indicated Ratsoma.

Ward councillor, Elma Nel said she and the ward committee in the area had spoken to the police about the problem.

“We are aware of the situation and we have spoken to Colonel Caroline Naidoo from Pretoria West to help with the situation,” said Nel.

Resident Erick Cordier said the small plastic shacks being built in the area were increasing each day.

“These shacks are growing it is like a small squatter camp forming here.”

Tshwane metro police spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the metro police were aware of the situation and were speaking to concerned parties about ways to tackle the problem.

Comment from the Pretoria West police could not be immediately obtained.
