More people are choosing to live in residential estates or gated communities to escape crime.

But Theunis Kotze, General Manager of ADT Inland region, has warned against the false impression that residential estates and townhouse complexes offered the ultimate safety and security.

“Criminals ferret information from contractors or service providers to estates who knowingly or unknowingly provide it,” he says.

Crime syndicates often target lifestyle estates exactly because those residents tend to become complacent.

“A particularly serious problem, is information passed on by people who live in, or have regular jobs within, estates.

“Armed with information, and their own reconnaissance, the criminals keep finding new ways of gaining access to estates.”
