A house in Proclamation Hill was burned to ashes on Sunday afternoon.

Homeowner Jan Pretorius said the fire broke out in a cabin at 17:00 while they were inside the main house.

Pretorius said the cause of the fire was unclear because the cabin was locked at the time.

“I was in the main house with my wife, grandchild, daughter, and son-in-law when I heard a noise coming from the cabin. I went outside to check what was happening and when I opened to door, I saw the cabin on fire. I immediately alerted everyone and we called for help,” he said.

Pretorius said all the neighbours helped to control the fire.

“We used hosepipes to put out the flames, but not before everything was burned to the ground. The fire brigade, CPF, Ert and AfriForum arrived later to assist,” he said.

“Everything in the cabin was burned out including clothes and valuable items. My daughter and her fiancé were staying in the cabin with their six-week-old baby.”

Pretorius was grateful that nobody was injured. He also thanked neighbours for their quick response.

“I would like to thank sector 1 and 2, AfriForum and Ert for all their donations. They have really helped us,” he said.
