Crime and prostitution have returned to haunt residents near the Pretoria West High School after a a lull in recent times.

David Seleka told Rekord prostitution and muggings of high school pupils on the pedestrian bridge in Vom Hagen Street next to the school were still a problem.

He said residents had assumed this was after they cleared the area of bush, cut down trees and the police increased their patrol to the area but this did not seem to have worked.

CPF public relations officer, Thesigan Pillay said criminal activity on the bridge had been a “problem for a while”.

Last year, the school reported the muggings of pupils and police acted.

Pillay said residents were organising to protect themselves.

He said early on Friday morning, residents apprehended an alleged rapist.

“This was undoubtedly bad vigilante acts,” said Pillay adding he did not “blame residents for trying to protect themselves”.

“Police seem to act when there is an outcry then neglect to follow through.”

He said the police raid an area “but after the operations, problems seem to come back” because there was “no real prevention of crime” strategy.

He said he was waiting for more information on what happened to the alleged rapist.
