33 arrested during crime prevention operation

Members of the east cluster policing unit arrested 33 people during crime combating operations over the weekend.

Eersterust police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo said the arrests took place in Eersterust, Kameeldrift, Sinoville, Mamelodi and Mamelodi east.

“The various operations were focused on tracing wanted suspects, enforcing compliance of the Liquor Act, vehicle searches and roadblocks,” said Shibambo.

Shibambo said the majority were arrested for crimes such as assault, possession of drugs, shoplifting, and contravention of liquor and road traffic acts.

“During these operations, two men were arrested in Eersterust on Saturday for drug dealing.”

He said the men were driving a blue Mercedes-Benz C-class with a Durban registration number.

“The police stopped the vehicle and while checking the licence disc, officers noticed the passenger concealing something under the seat,” said Shibambo.

“They approached the passenger and requested him to take out the item he was hiding, which turned out to be dagga.”

Shibambo said officers also found a large amount of cash in his possession.

“The driver was also searched and officers also found dagga where he was seated.”

Shibambo said 562.7g of dagga was confiscated from the men and both were arrested.

Roadblocks in the cluster also led to the arrests of several people for drunken driving in Eersterust.

All those arrested will appear in various courts in Pretoria on Monday.
