UPDATE: Fifteen injured in soccer riot at Loftus stadium

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has strongly condemned the acts of hooliganism by fans at  Loftus Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The fans went berserk towards the end of the Mamelodi Sundowns versus Orlando Pirates clash and vandalised the stadium according to the statement PSL spokesperson Luxolo September.

He said the PSL apologised to all the supporters and stakeholders who were at the stadium at the time of the horrific incident, and also those watching on television who were inconvenienced by what happened.

“Such behaviour at our stadiums is a bad advert for our football.

“The match had to be stopped in the 82nd minute by the referee to clear the pitch.”

He said the game later resumed.

September also said the PSL was awaiting reports on what had led to the violence.

Kay Makhubele, Gauteng police spokesperson said the reasons for the violence were unclear but the police were  investigating cases of malicious damage to property and assault.

Fifteen people were caught in the crossfire.

Two were treated on the scene for minor injuries.

“Thirteen were taken to various hospitals with moderate injuries.”

Makhubele said although no one had been arrested, the SAPS had handled the situation appropriately.

“It was violent, but we managed to contain the situation.”
